Something that I have noticed a lot of lately is young blokes (P platers sometimes) driving Land Cruisers pedal-to-the-metal, belching out black smoke while smoking and/or talking on the mobile phone. In fact the amount of people that I see driving and talking on the phone is just incredible. That IS dangerous and I agree with police clamping down on that.

Re this speeding thing. I asked the question before but no one provided an answer. For those that say speed cameras are just revenue raiser what is the answer to the problem. Is there one.

And yes there is a problem with speeders. Lets get away from the speed kills point and have a look at the amount of accidents caused by people going above the speed limit. May not be fatalities but people get injured and cars get written off. All costs in the end because someone wanted to go faster than everyone else to get a couple of car spaces in front. You have all seen them on the roads. I reckon the biggest problem with a lot of drivers is impatience and frustration. I don't think anyone who has had a family member injured or a car written off by a speeder would agree that cameras should not be used. They are a deterrent at best and the very fact that so many people keep getting pinged when they know the camera is there or likely to be there is really amazing. Imagine for a second what it would be like with no limits

Better signage for one, cut out this 60km to 50 km crap, either one i don't care, sometimes in heavy traffic you cant even see signs if there are a few trucks , and if they did this, maybe we can keep our eyes on the road and not the speedo

Smoking, eating, drinking, talking on the phone all take your attention away from the road to some degree. And the problem's not just with Landcruiser drivers. Some of the worst offenders here are young girls with the Lancers, Fiestas, Swifts, etc etc and yes most on P plates.

Problem lies not only with the young though. Was heading along my street last week taking my boys to daycare and as I approached an intersection with a stop sign an elderley man in a VL pulled up at the stop sign. He looked straight at me then looked back straight ahead and proceeded to pull out in front of me and my young boys. At this point I was about 15 metres from the intersection. I missed hitting him by about 1 metre through a combination of braking and swerving.

I don't know how to be politically correct about this comment. Maybe someone can help me out......In my area there is an ever increasing number of female drivers behind the wheel of large 4wd vehicles designed specifically for OFF-road use while donning the latest fashion in designer headwear from a place with whom the Bush family were other than friendly. These people think the roads were made for their use and their use only. They have a total disregard for other road users. I rarely see them look as they pull out in front of me or cut me off. And I often cop dirty looks and abuse if I sound my horn or shake my head in disgust. Oh and more often than not they are displaying disabled stickers.....maybe mentally disabled?

Absolutely agree 100%. There is a School just down the road from my house and you see all these mums in their Patrol or Land cruiser wagons and all they think about is getting THEIR KIDS to school and pick up THEIR KIDS in the afternoon and everyone else can go ..... themselves. They don't care where they park, they pull out without looking and if you were to hit them, even if it was their fault, you would be the worlds biggest ....

This is a huge generalisation I know, but I just think that most people who have an expensive shiny new 4X4 think they are more important than other road users. The other thing is that people buy 4x4s because they are big and safe but they are not safer in an accident than a conventional car.

4wds are not safe! How can it be safe if I, driving behind one, cannot see 2 cars in front of me. Or is it unnecessary these days to be aware of what the driver 2 or 3 cars in front is doing?

    Firstly, ppl dont understand 4wd's.
A subaru is a 4wd. a Ford territory may not be.
Your beef is not with 4wd's it is with larger vehicles.
A 4wd mechanism only enhanses the safety of a vehicle.
I know what your getting at, but there r plenty of mothers droppin off & picking up their kids in conventional cars with the same attitude.
As 4 not being able to see 2-3 cars in front, the same goes 4 buses. trucks, vans, trailers, etc, etc.
Leave a greater braking distance when in doubt, but yes, I know it can be frustrating at times.
    Cheers Fred.

You do not need to see 2 cars infront of you.. you should not be accelerating or braking based on what the cars two in front are doing, you should have a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you so if they jump on their brakes for what ever reason you have time to do the same and not cause an accident.

Enough of the driving practices! This thread has become about red lights, and how to drive properly. Perhaps we need to re-title the thread!
