Not sure how this would work in practice but i was reading a gardening tips and tricks book and one tip was to glue or tape a "whistle key finder" (you whistle and it beeps), to anything you usually lose in the garden. If you leave a tool behind and go back to the last customers house and start whistling the army march, its pretty hard for a customer to say "No i haven't seen it"...

Better start whistlerling at the local pawn brokers , if you see your gear get the police to come down to the pawn brokers, dont say anything to the shop owners other wise it might go under the counter or disappear out the back .
