Shindaiwa 2 stroke multi tool, with snipper attachment and then get an articulating hedge trimmer later on and Makita 4 stroke blower. Or if you're on a budget get some pope gear to start with then progress to Makita or Shindaiwa later.

You have to learn to walk before you can run, once you have learnt to walk, sit on your fat @r$e and push levers. Also a good quality, high output back pack blower (Shindaiwa EB 8520) should be on your list once you get going.

The Tandem Power TN008 is almost an exact clone of the HRU196 - complete with mulch plug, and uses the same plastic catcher

Airflow isn't messed with as it doesn't have a blade brake.
No 'dead man's handle' - so I don't have to keep restarting it either!

Gave it a good flogging today - and at $850 is cheaper than the Honda
    How much was it David

$850 isn't much cheaper than honda i was quoted under $900 last year for the Honda 196 and got the 197d for about $860
Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

I think you'll struggle to find any 196's left - I would have got one if available locally. If you find one they'll likely fetch a premium.

The cloth bag on the new models is a great idea, but blade break, dead-man's handle and domestic motor are not the best choices for contractors.

I love the 196, and the Tandem Power TN008 is a clone

Just ordered one of these from the SA agent. $825 but I have to wait as he is sold out. Reckons they are walking off the shelf.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.
Ian - went to Mt Waverley Mower Power as suggested & now new owner of a 197D. For anyone interested they still have a bunch.

Been very happy with it so far and its a lot quieter than I was expecting. Ended up tossing a coin over the Stihl KM90R Combi wipper & pole saw vs the Shindi stuff. 1st Job booked, no equippment, suffering from analysis overload - make a decision! Stihl won. Then picked up a 2155 Echo blower at the weekend. Still bonding with it all but otherwise happy.

Make sure you keep that Stihl locked up on your trailer, the thieves have good taste and always seem to go for the Stihls.
