Default Belt or Shaft drive deck for ZTR

    Hi folks,

what would be the best set up for a zero turn, belt drive or shaft drive decks?

I'm interested in the Ferris 3100 or the 5100 diesel, these are belt drive, my previous mower was a j.d 997, it was shaft drive, which I thought was the stronger option, but as some are building big zero turns with belt drive still, I am wandering why?

is it about build cost....or duability, ....or?

    interested in your opionions guys.

    cheers.

Wrong forum but anyway, both shaft and belt drive are used extensively, pluses for shaft drive is no broken belts, no belt slip, greater cutting height adjustment etc, belt drive pluses are cheaper to manufacture and therefore buy, no PTO to smash when you run over a unmovable object, no PTO to service. Both have there place.

The benchmark of Zero turns the turf tiger is shaft driven. The bench mark of collection mowers the Walker is also shaft driven.

had a walker many years ago.....great machine.

I'm liking the ferris 3100, it is belt drive, so is its big brother the 5100 diesel animal, I just had it in my head the bigger commercial gear these days would be shaft drive.

I personally prefer the shaft drive, the deer 997 was the smoothest mower I've ever opperated, my previous toro was a 588efi, belt drive, awsome mower, had no issues at all with the belt drive, very high quality gear, just shaft drive is my personal preference, and that's why I just wish the ferris was shaft drive.

researching new mowers is just so much fun.....my head hurts! ha ha
