Interesting! I was thinking mainly about having to mix fuels and carry multiple containers.

But I have no idea what I’m talking about...

I’m trying to learn as much as I can before I get started and I’m not very mechanical.

I did however purchase a second hand HRU216 for $750 and have so far changed the blade plate, blades, oil, spark plug, and cleaned the carby... learning something new every day. I did a practice lawn with it and it worked great. But now I’m way off topic

Realistically you can start of with the Honda 4st but once the work load picks up say 9-12 homes a day the Honda gets heavy.
I've had 3 of them over the years but they did spend a fair amount of time sitting more than being used and non got worn out just sold off and went back to 2st.
The best machine on the market would be the Husqvarna 525 for light weight, power, near no vibration and reliability and longevity. Many other great machines out there too but the Husqvarna 525 mainly for being light and for all day every day use, once you own one any thing else you try won't be like a 525.

have had stihl, on 2 machines the first carb lasted 9 mths, 2nd machine carb lasted 6 mths, cost to replace was 1/2 cost of new machine, so went away from stihl.
have had a husky 4 stroke, it had honda 25cc motor. only issue with that was i had to grease driveshaft every 2 weeks, otherwise got bad vibrations.
never did that on any other machine i owned

Over the years tried the 4 stroke but as mentioned heavy and if you missed oil changes it will bite you ... just find two stroke small engines light and heaps of power for what I do .. being an old boy now couldn’t even lift a Honda lol

Cheers for that - I'll take a look at the Huskys.

I've been doing a couple of 'practice' lawns for friends and family (regional Vic...) and I can definitely see that line trimming is the hardest bit on the back. I have a terrible bent shaft one (trimmer not back) that is not a lot of fun to use at all - so I can definitely see the benefits of a lighter model.

    Thanks.

I'm the same as Geoff, tried them and have gone back to 2/
I carry a 10lt fuel drum for the mowers and have a 5lt for 2/ I have a small clear plastic bottle marked at the 100ml level and simply fill with oil to this level and add to 5lt tank I also use a small I litre bottle to carry my 2/ oil with me for work and have attached a pump top to it( 2-2.2mls per pump) and have a 500ml bottle so if i run out of 2/ I can use the pump to measure easy and no mess
I have found the husky 525LST to be a good all rounder light enough for every day use and strong enough for the occasional feral clean up
Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

I'd say as for starters just get a used trimmer and blower.Just ask us what you can buy and we'll tell you yay or nay if it's worth it.

Make sure you attach a strap to your whippy. Makes it a lot easier. Also get a speed feed attachment. Makes it a lot easier re loading your line. Especially it hot weather.
And all the best with your career change. Haven't met anyone who's regretted it.

This is a great tip - it's really valuable to hear how people who know what talking about do things.

I'll get some of those containers and a can of harden up and I'm sure I'll be fine with a 2/

Thanks very much for the offer! I'll take you up if you don't mind?

I'm actually finding it a bit difficult to come across a good quality second hand trimmer or blower - but I'll keep looking.

If I need to buy new, I am looking at either :

    STIHL FS 70
    or
    HUSQVARNA 322L

That's around $500 to get started. Better off just paying a bit more and getting the Husqvarna 525?

In terms of a blower, if this is not terrible, I was thinking to start with it:

    ECHO PB-250
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/echo-25-...lower_p0197731

I'm trying to keep costs low as I build things up, but still get decent quality that will do the job without making me want to quit after the first week

    Advice appreciated!

thanks for the tip - I'll definitely get a strap.

Speed feed - just watched a youtube clip on those and yes - that looks very helpful.

You’ll be fine with the Echo blower PB -250. Also, Bunnings have the Echo trimmer at $389 straight shaft. Not the 525 but good enough as a start up and very light. I used an entry level line trimmer when I started and it’s still running after 6 years but only used as a spare now.

Full warranty on both and will serve you well. Once you get going and grow ur run then upgrade. Bunnings also have Valvoline 2 stroke oil in a 1 litre that has the measurements on the bottle so easy to mix using the 100 ml level to 5L of fuel. Once you run out buy the 4L and fill the small bottle. That way you’ll always have 2s on hand.

Speed feed you’ll have to get a mower store. Actual line I suggest 2kg roll. Will last you awhile. As far as size, well.....u will get an enormous amount of opinions. Lol. 2.4mm thickness or 2.7mm. Wouldn’t go any bigger on a small engine 2s as it puts too much load on the gearbox.

I use 2.7mm round Trailblazer... can’t beat it IMOP but I’m sure I’ve opened a can of worms.
